Alright, Bozeman — April is here, and if you've lived here for more than one spring cycle, you already know what that means: mornings that smell like pine and snowmelt, afternoons that might actually get sunny, and a to-do list that feels impossible to finish. Honestly? That's exactly how we like it.
This month is one of those magical in-between stretches where you can ski in the morning, grab a pint on a downtown patio in the afternoon, and catch a live show in the evening — all in the same day. That's just Bozeman in April. Let's break down what's worth your time this month.
Arts, Culture & Things That'll Make You Think
The arts scene is really popping this April. Whether you're into music, film, visual art, or something a little more unexpected, there's no shortage of ways to feed your brain.
Caroline Shaw + Attacca Quartet — April 9–10 Grammy-winning composer Caroline Shaw performs with the Attacca Quartet — Thursday night at Willow Spring Ranch, and Friday at Reynolds Recital Hall at MSU. If you've never heard of her, now's your chance to fix that. Tickets at montanachambermusic.org.
Catch & Release: A Fly Fishing Art Exhibition — April 10 – July 4
An art show about rivers, fish, flies, and the culture of fly fishing? Very Bozeman. Opening reception is April 10 from 5–7 p.m. at 2612 W. Main St. Free admission — bring your fishing stories.
Free Symphony Concert — April 11
Beethoven's Romance in F Major plus César Franck's Symphony in D minor, performed for free at Hope Lutheran Church. Saturday at 7 p.m. A great evening out that won't cost you a dime.
Film Society Screening: "TOW" — April 7
Catch this film at the Ellen Theatre featuring Oscar-nominated Rose Byrne in a story about a woman living out of her car on the streets of Seattle. Unexpectedly moving stuff. Tickets at bozemanfilmsociety.org.
MSU Student Exhibitions at the Emerson — Through April 24
Multiple exhibitions running right now: student work in Galleria Hall, Christopher Campbell's photography in the Weaver Room, and John Henry Haseltine's "The Mountain Clown and Other Foul Animals" through April 24. Plus a New to You Art Sale on April 30. Lots going on at 111 S. Grand.
Live Music This Month
If you love live music, April in Bozeman is a seriously good time. Between weekly residencies and one-off shows, there's something happening almost every night of the week.
The Wailers featuring Aston Barrett Jr. — April 14
The legendary reggae outfit keeps the spirit of Bob Marley alive — and they're bringing it to Bozeman this month. Don't miss this one.
Ongoing Weekly Music Lineups Tune Up Bar (24 W. Mendenhall) has live music Wednesday through Saturday with no cover. Over on W. Main, catch Singer/Songwriter Night on Mondays, Bluegrass on Thursdays, Jazz with Alex Robilotta on Fridays, and Rock/Funk on Saturdays. Bozeman Hot Springs also hosts live local music on Sundays and Thursdays if you want to soak and listen.
The Takes at The Filling Station — April 30
An 8 p.m. show to close out the month strong at 2005 N. Rouse Ave. Tickets at the door.
Get Outside (While You Still Can Do Both)
This is genuinely one of the most unique times of year for outdoor adventurers. You can legitimately ski in the morning and hike in the afternoon. Bridger Bowl is just 16 miles out, Big Sky is still running, and the trails around town are thawing out in all the right ways.
For hikers, Drinking Horse Mountain Trail offers a solid 2.2-mile loop with great Bozeman views (and it's dog-friendly). Peets Hill is perfect for a sunset stroll. Just expect some mud at lower elevations — it's April in Montana, after all. That's not a bug, it's a feature.
If you've been itching to get on the water, April is when fly fishing really starts to wake up. The Gallatin and Madison rivers are running full of snowmelt, and the fish are hungry. Hit up a local outfitter for guided trip options if you want to make the most of it.
April Outdoor Tips:
- Pack layers — mornings can be frosty, afternoons can be surprisingly warm
- Check trail conditions before heading up — higher elevations may still be snowed in
- Yellowstone typically reopens to vehicles in mid-April — perfect timing for a day trip with way fewer crowds
- Bozeman Hot Springs is always a good call after a big hike day
- Hyalite Canyon is stunning this time of year and great for stargazing on clear nights
Family-Friendly Picks
Easter lands on April 5th this year, and the Bozeman area has a bunch of fun events for families. Egg hunts are popping up all over the place — some totally free, with age-divided sections, Easter Bunny appearances, face painting, and even hot cocoa. Check local listings for times and specific spots near you.
The Museum of the Rockies is always a solid indoor option when the weather isn't cooperating — their dinosaur collection alone is worth the trip (largest T-Rex skull ever found, people). And the Bozeman Public Library has ongoing programs all month in the Teen Corner and regular story walk events at Bozeman Pond Park.
Downtown Bozeman: Restaurant Week + Patio Season
One last thing you don't want to sleep on — Downtown Bozeman Restaurant Week runs April 24–30. Seven days of off-menu specials, exclusive dining experiences, and chances to win prizes from local sponsors. It's a great excuse to try somewhere new or revisit a favorite with a little added fanfare.
And yes — patio season is either here or very close. Keep an eye out for Shine Beer Sanctuary, The Bacchus Pub, Ted's Montana Grill, and others cracking open their outdoor seating. When the patios open, you know spring has truly arrived.
Whatever you get up to this month, get out there and enjoy it. April in Bozeman doesn't last long — and it's too good to miss.
Until next time, Greg
