Bozeman, July is here — and if you thought June was good, just wait. This is peak summer in Big Sky Country, and the calendar is absolutely packed. The Fourth, the State Fair, Music on Main, a country music festival just down the road, and long warm evenings that seem to go on forever. July in Bozeman is the real deal.
Here's what's on tap this month.
Happy Fourth of July, Bozeman
Let's start with the big one. Bozeman's Fourth of July celebration features one of Montana's largest fireworks displays, kicking off at dusk. Grab your spot early, bring a blanket, and enjoy. It's one of those nights that reminds you there's genuinely nowhere better to be.
Music on Main — Every Thursday All Month
This is the summer staple that never gets old. Every Thursday evening in July and August, Music on Main brings live music to downtown Bozeman from 7–8:30 p.m., with a Kids' Zone running from 6:30–8 p.m. for the little ones. Food vendors are on site, and downtown shops stay open late. It's free, it's fun, and it's one of the best things about summer in this town. Make it a weekly ritual.
Big Sky Country State Fair — July 15–19
Five straight days of pure Montana summer fun. The Big Sky Country State Fair at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds features the Bozeman Roundup Rodeo, live concerts, carnival rides, 4-H exhibits, FFA Mutton Bustin', a dog dock diving contest, and the Mountaineers 4x4 Mud Bog competition. And this year's concert lineup is a good one — Chase Rice plays July 15 on his farewell tour, Morgan Wade brings Ladies' Night on July 16, and Stone Temple Pilots headline July 17 for a rare, up-close rock show. That's three nights of solid live music on top of everything else the fair has to offer. Don't sleep on it.
Headwaters Country Jam — July 23–25
If you're a country music fan, this one is worth the short drive to Cardwell. The Headwaters Country Jam runs July 23–25 and draws big-name country acts to one of the most scenic outdoor festival settings in Montana. Camping is available on-site, and the vibe is classic Montana summer — open skies, cold drinks, and great music. Check headwaterscountryjam.com for the full lineup and tickets.
Music in the Mountains — July 30–31
Cap the month off with a trip up to Big Sky. Music in the Mountains runs July 30–31 at Len Hill Park — outdoor live music with mountain views that are hard to beat. A perfect way to close out July.
Get Outside — July Is Peak Season
Trails are fully open, the rivers are warm enough to wade and cool enough to fish, and the wildflowers are absolutely going off. July is the month to finally tackle that bigger hike you've been putting off.
Hyalite Canyon is stunning right now — the reservoir is perfect for paddle boarding and kayaking, and the upper trails offer some of the best alpine scenery in the Gallatin Range. If you haven't hiked to Hyalite Peak yet, this is your month.
Fly fishing on the Gallatin and Madison is excellent in July — early mornings and evenings are your best windows as water temps rise through the day. And if you've been wanting to explore Yellowstone, July is beautiful — just plan ahead, as crowds peak this time of year.
July Outdoor Tips:
- Start big hikes early — July afternoons can bring afternoon thunderstorms, so aim to summit by noon
- Water temperatures in rivers are ideal for wading and floating — bring a dry bag
- The Bozeman Farmers Markets (Tuesdays at Lindley Park, Saturdays at the Fairgrounds) are at peak season — don't miss them
- Sunscreen is non-negotiable this month — the elevation means you'll burn faster than you think
- Book Yellowstone accommodations and dining well in advance if you're planning a trip
The Art Walk Continues
Don't forget — the Bozeman Art Walk keeps rolling on the second Friday of every month through September, with downtown galleries open 6–8 p.m. July's Art Walk falls on the 10th — a great way to kick off the weekend with a stroll down Main Street.
July in Bozeman is everything. Soak up every single day of it.
Until next time, Greg
