May in Bozeman

Well, Bozeman — we made it through mud season, and May is here to reward us for our patience. The days are getting longer, the mountains are green from the snowmelt, and the social calendar is filling up fast. If April was Bozeman easing into spring, May is Bozeman fully waking up and saying, "Okay, let's go."

Here's everything worth knowing about this month.

Get Your Wheels Ready — Gallatin Valley Bike Swap

Kick off the month right at the Gallatin Valley Bike Swap on Saturday, May 2, at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds. The event offers a huge variety of consignment items: bikes for kids, adult mountain, road, gravel and commuter bikes, bike trailers, accessories, parts, tools, clothing, and more — with bikes for all price points from recreational to high-end competitive models. General admission opens at 9 a.m. If you've been thinking about upgrading your setup for summer trail season, this is your moment.

Live Music This Month

May is when Bozeman's live music scene really starts to heat up ahead of the summer rush.

The ELM has shows lined up on May 6 and May 14 — check their calendar for the latest artists and tickets. The weekly lineups at Tune Up Bar, MAP Brewing, and other downtown spots keep rolling all month long with no cover on most nights.

And if you want to start getting excited for June — Mumford & Sons are headed to Bobcat Stadium at Montana State University on June 4 as part of their Prizefighter Tour, co-written and co-produced with Aaron Dessner of The National. Tickets are moving, so don't sleep on it.

Get Outside — This Is What May Is For

May is prime time to get back on the trails in full force. The lower elevation paths around town are drying out nicely, and Hyalite Canyon starts to open up beautifully this time of year. Fly fishing on the Gallatin and Madison rivers is absolutely on fire right now — the rivers are full, the fish are active, and the scenery is ridiculous.

Yellowstone National Park is generally open to vehicles by mid-April, and the spring wildlife viewing is unbeatable — bison calves, bear cubs, elk, and wolf pups are all out and about. May is honestly one of the best times to make that trip before the summer crowds arrive.

If you're a cyclist, May is the month trails start opening up in earnest. Copper City Trails outside of Three Forks typically gets less snow and dries out early, making it one of the first places ready to ride in the spring. Worth the short drive if you're eager to get back on dirt.

May Outdoor Tips:

  • Farmers market season is almost here — the Bozeman Farmers Market kicks off Tuesdays starting June 16 at Lindley Park, 5–8 p.m. Start getting excited.
  • Wildflowers are starting to appear at lower elevations — Peets Hill and the Story Mill trails are gorgeous right now
  • Mornings can still be cold, especially early May — keep those layers handy
  • Hyalite Reservoir is a great destination for a picnic or paddleboard once the weather stabilizes

A Great Month to Explore Downtown

With the patios now officially open and the energy in town ramping up, May is a great excuse to wander Main Street, pop into some of the local boutiques, and try somewhere new for dinner. Bozeman's restaurant scene keeps getting better every year, and spring menus are always worth checking out.

Whatever you've got planned this month — get after it. May in Bozeman doesn't mess around.

Until next time,

Greg
