Bozeman, August is here, and it's bringing the kind of energy you only get at the height of summer. Sweet Pea Festival, the Bridger Ridge Run, a Renaissance Festival, and the last great stretch of warm, golden evenings before fall starts creeping in. If July was about going big, August is about soaking up every last drop before the season turns.
Here's what's happening this month.
Sweet Pea Festival: August 7–9
This is the big one, and it's about as Bozeman as it gets. Held each August in historic Lindley Park, Sweet Pea is a three-day community festival filled with live music, dance, theatre, visual arts, children's activities, and local food. Locals plan their whole month around this one. Grab your tickets, bring the family, and plan to spend a full day wandering the park. Outside Bozeman
Bridger Ridge Run
If you're the type who measures summer in miles instead of margaritas, this one's for you. The Bridger Ridge Run is a rigorous 20-mile race held each August in Bozeman, with all first-time runners required to attend a pre-race meeting. Even if you're not racing, it's worth catching a glimpse of runners tackling the ridgeline — the views alone make it a spectacle.
Bozeman Renaissance Festival: August 22–23
A little something different this year. The third annual Bozeman Renaissance Festival runs Saturday, August 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, August 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 901 N. Black Ave. Costumes, performances, vendors, and a great excuse for a weekend of pure whimsy. A fun one to bring the kids to.
Live Music & Local Happenings
August keeps the music going strong, with shows scattered across local venues all month. Logjam Presents welcomes Dexter and The Moonrocks for a live concert performance, and Music Ranch Montana hosts an evening tribute to Merle Haggard performed by his son Ben Haggard. Check local listings for exact dates and tickets — there's almost always something happening on a given weekend.
Music on Main continues every Thursday evening downtown through the first week of August, so catch it while you still can before it wraps for the season.
Get Outside: Make the Most of It
August is prime time for getting outside before the weather starts to shift. Trails are dry, rivers are warm, and the long days mean you've got plenty of daylight to play with.
This is also peak huckleberry season in the surrounding mountains — if you know a good local spot (or want to find one), now's the time. Hyalite Canyon continues to be a favorite for hiking, paddle boarding, and stargazing on clear August nights, and the Gallatin and Madison rivers remain excellent for fly fishing, especially in the early morning before the heat sets in.
August Outdoor Tips:
- Start hikes early to beat both the heat and the afternoon thunderstorms
- August is prime huckleberry season — bring a container if you're out on the trails
- Fire danger tends to peak this month — check current restrictions before any campfires
- The Gallatin Valley Farmers Market (Saturdays) and Bozeman Farmers Market (Tuesdays) are both still in full swing — perfect for fresh produce before the season winds down
- Smoky skies can happen this time of year depending on regional fire activity — check air quality if you have respiratory sensitivities
Soak Up What's Left of Summer
With Sweet Pea, the Renaissance Festival, and the Bridger Ridge Run all happening this month, August doesn't leave much room to sit still. Add in farmers markets, patio dinners, and long evening walks downtown, and you've got a recipe for one of the best months of the year in Bozeman.
Enjoy every last bit of it. Fall will be here before you know it!
Until next time,
Greg
