The Cultural Event of the Year — Opera Montana's "A River Runs Through It"
This one is genuinely special, and it doesn't happen twice. Opera Montana is presenting the world premiere of "A River Runs Through It" at the Ellen Theatre in Bozeman, running September 18–20 and 24–27. The opera is a brand new adaptation of Norman Maclean's beloved novella, commissioned by Opera Montana in celebration of the book's 50th anniversary. The story follows two brothers growing up and growing apart against a backdrop of family, faith, and fly fishing in early 20th century Montana — and if that isn't the most Montana story ever put to music, we don't know what is. MSU Homecoming: September 25
Bobcat fans, mark your calendars. MSU Homecoming week kicks off with a Pep Rally on Friday, September 25 at 6 p.m. on E. Main St., and the Bobcats host Northern Arizona at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday, September 27. Whether you're an alum or just love the energy of a college football Saturday in Bozeman, this is a great weekend to be downtown.
Live Music: Theory of a Deadman, Sevendust & More
September closes out with a bang on the live music front. Theory of a Deadman and Sevendust bring a big rock show to the Gallatin County Fairgrounds on September 29. Deer Tick also plays The ELM on September 30 — a great indie folk-rock act that always puts on a fantastic show. And don't forget the Art Walk on September 11, the last one of the season, with downtown galleries open 6–8 p.m. — a perfect excuse for one final stroll down Main Street before things quiet down.
Surf Challenge Montana: Late September
If you've got kids in soccer or just love a high-energy tournament atmosphere, Surf Challenge Montana is one of the biggest youth soccer events in the region. It welcomes more than 140 teams and 6,000 visitors from across Montana and the western United States for a weekend of competition in Bozeman. The energy around town during this event is fantastic.
Get Outside: September Is Peak Fall in Bozeman
Here's the thing about September in Bozeman: the outdoor scene is arguably better than July. The crowds thin out, the trails are still in great shape, the air is crisp and clean, and the fall colors start showing up in the hills and canyons. Hyalite Canyon in September is absolutely stunning. Peets Hill turns golden. The Bridger Mountains start showing their full autumn palette toward the end of the month.
Fly fishing also hits its fall stride in September — cooler water temps mean more active fish, and the rivers are less crowded than they were all summer. If you haven't gotten out on the Gallatin or Madison yet this year, September is your window.

- Morning temps can drop fast this time of year, so layer up on early hikes
