November is a great month to explore downtown Bozeman before the holiday rush hits. Local shops are stocked up for the season, the crowds are manageable, and the restaurants and bars on Main Street have a cozy, unhurried feel that's hard to beat on a cold November evening. Think of it as your chance to get ahead of December before things get busy.
Turkey Trot — Thanksgiving Morning
A Bozeman Thanksgiving tradition. The Turkey Trot 5K and 10K takes place every Thanksgiving morning, with all proceeds going to the Gallatin Valley Food Bank. It's a great way to earn your dinner, give back to the community, and get outside before the feast. Registration details at local running shops and online.
Bobcat Basketball Tips Off
With football season wrapping up, MSU Bobcat basketball gets rolling in November at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. If you haven't been to a Bobcat basketball game, it's one of the most fun and underrated live sports experiences in the region. Check msubobcats.com for the November home schedule.
IN BIG SKY
Opening Day — November 25
This is the one everyone has been waiting for. Big Sky Resort opens for the 2026–27 ski season on Wednesday, November 25, the day before Thanksgiving. With 5,850 acres of terrain and a vertical drop of 4,350 feet, there is simply no bigger ski mountain in America. Early season terrain varies year to year depending on snowfall and snowmaking, but there's always something to ski on opening day. The energy on the mountain that first day is unlike anything else.
If you're planning to be there for opening weekend, book early. Thanksgiving week at Big Sky fills up fast, and for good reason.
The Gallatin Canyon Drive Gets Wintry
One of the most dramatic seasonal transitions in Southwest Montana is the Gallatin Canyon in November. The river takes on a steely, cold look, the canyon walls lose their leaves, and the first real snowfall on the peaks above makes the whole corridor feel like you've entered a different world. Worth the drive just for the scenery, even if you're not skiing yet.
WORTH THE DRIVE
Livingston in November
Livingston is at its most characterful in November. The tourist season is long over, the wind is blowing as only a Livingston wind can, and the locals are settling into their winter rhythms. If you've been wanting to explore some of the great restaurants and bars on Main Street without the summer crowds, November is your window. It's a great weekend day trip from Bozeman.
November Tips for Southwest Montana:

- Layer up for evenings downtown, November nights in Bozeman are cold
November in Southwest Montana is the deep breath before the plunge. By the end of the month, winter is here in full, the mountain is open, and the best season of the year is officially underway.
